Failure assessment and root cause failure analysis in gas turbine components require expertise in qualitative as well as quantitative metallography, fractography and the various microscopy techniques. More importantly, expertise in quantitative residual life assessment (RLA) of parts and a thorough understanding of the underlying deformation and fracture mechanisms including physics based damage modeling is equally important. Expertise in both technology fields is necessary to conduct meaningful assessment of failures.
